5 Codes - Barthes Theory

Case Study: Brooklyn 99, Halloween IV

HER

Who's going to win this year's heist?

Who took the plack from the caboodle?

Why are there three placks?

ACT

The annual precinct heist is announced > They make teams > Terry doesn't want to be involved > Jake and Gina get the plack first > Gina gets injured > Heist is redo > Amy and Rosa get the plack > Captain holt steals the plack (via a Cheddar thief) > Jake get the plack by getting intel from Charles > They all claim to have the plack > Lights go out with "heists are dumb" written on the plack > they accuse Terry of pulling the stunt > turns out it was Gina

SEM

Halloween decorations - The whole precinct is covered in halloween decorations as the Heist episodes are always done on halloween

Spy like music - The music played when the heists are in operation sound similar to the soundtracks used in spy films when the agents has to steal something from a secure location. They are esentially doing the same in this episode just with a Caboodle

Uniforms - The main casts don't seem to be wearing any type of policeman's uniform. They seem to dress more casually. Except for Amy and Raymond who are more serious and thus have a more formal attire.

SYM

The casual tone of the entire show and that they're doing a halloween yearly heist is a direct contrast with their jobs as police officers. The theme for this entire show is that they're cops in the weirdest state in the USA (New York). They might be good at their jobs but they don't take themselves seriously at any given point. It's a play on the expectation of cops being serious all the time with the reality that most of them are just goofing off during down time.

REF

New York city is nutorious for housing the weirdest people in the states. This show takes place in Brooklyn which is the motherload of weirdos in the entirety of the state.
