TIkTok is a video sharing app first launched to the public in 2018 with over 1 billion active users. However, the app first started in China where it launched in 2016 under the name Douyin by the ByteDance Company. ByteDance also owns many other IPs such as news platforms, online english courses, and even Mobile Legends.
The regulation for Douyin are very different from TikTok. The main difference is their regulations regarding children.
Douyin's Regulation
Children under the age of 14 have these regulations automated into their app:
- The app is locked from 10pm-6am
- The app is limited for 40 minutes of use per day
- Videos promoted to children often involve home science experiments, educational videos, museum clips, and culture videos
- The app is only accessible in mainland China
- 75% of the users are under 35 in the millennial generation.
TikTok's Regulation
TikTok is the version of Douyin launched to the rest of the world in 2016 their regulations look much different. For one they have no regulation for children under 14 like Douyin. Parental locks and setting for kids are entirely optional.

The videos available on TikTok include challenges, vlogs, ads, and other content.
