Post Modern exam questions

Analyze the key characteristics of postmodern media. [15]

According to Jean Baudrillard, postmodern texts are altered representations of reality, divided into hyper reality and heightened reality. Heightened reality is reality that is slightly modified to increase audience engagement but is still distinguishable from reality, while hyper reality is a made up reality that the audience can't tell it isn't real. An example of this is WWE, which is an wrestling entertainment program. Many people believe that the feuds, fights, and events are real however the majority of them are scripted. The winner of the events are pre-determined before hand. The wrestlers are considered entertainers so their main goal is to bring a convincing and engaging show, which causes some confusion among audience members whether or not the fighting in these matches are reality or scripted. Especially considering that all these events are done in front of a live audience. This is considered to be hyper reality as it blurs the lines between reality and fictions. While some of the feuds and injuries from fights may be real, the majority of them are not.

Post colonial exam questions

To what extent do the media represent people fully? [15]

According to post colonial theory by Paul Gilroy, the media has a reputation of not representing their characters properly in large part due to decades of Eurocentric ideals and world views that have a tendency to diminish previously colonized countries in favor of making the colonizers look good. An example of this is inaccurate representation is in the Netflix show The Crown, which is a retelling of the British royal family from the middle ages to the modern times. In an episode about Queen Elizabeth visiting one of the British colonies the white royal family is represented as well off, educated, posh, polite, and actively thinking highly of themselves against the colonies. While the people of the colonies comprised of the "others" they are represented as lower than the British and actively doting on the Queen when it was most likely not the case real history. This characterizes the others are happy to be under the British rule and that the royal family is sharing their prosperity with the less fortunate colony.
