When the trailer for the live-action remake of Aladdin was released in 2019 fans of the original movie were skeptical of the initial design of Will Smith's genie. Although he seemed to be a good candidate for the role the original CGI was very iffy. The animators tried too hard to make him look like the original cartoon, very blue and with an over-exaggerated body type. However, that didn't really translate well into live-action. Fans were nervous about the release of the movies.
Fans were also angry at the casting of the whole movie. The movie is supposed to be set in a fictional kingdom of Arab but the entire main cast looked too light-skinned.
